If past is prologue Linda Andrei’s resume is compelling indeed. Andrei is a retired cardiologist who is one of seven Democrats seeking the party’s nomination to unseat Tom Reed (R-Corning) as representative for the 23rd Congressional District which includes Chautauqua County.

TheCAT recently sat down with Dr. Andrei to talk about her quest to first win the June primary and, if successful, challenge Rep. Reed in the general election.

“A top reason is healthcare,” she said. Her proposal is simple: She would extend Medicare to everyone. “As a practicing physician I saw the waste in our system; Medicare is a much more efficient way to provide healthcare.”

The doctor, now retired, also advocates “single-payer” health insurance as a benefit that would help small business and farms in the Southern Tier. Dr. Andrei knows our area firsthand as she practiced cardiology in Corning, Elmira, Ithaca, Montour Falls, Painted Post and Watkins Glen.

Our interview and a careful read of her website left no doubt that Dr. Andrei is very much what is currently termed a “Progressive,” and thus, in our view, would present voters a very clear choice. Agree or disagree with either Dr. Andrei, if she wins the primary or Rep. Reed a voter will be able to make a choice congruent with her or his politics-always we believe an interesting and satisfying democratic exercise.

Back to that past is prologue: This is a person of accomplishment. From her resume:

“Her first residency was in Internal Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City where she was awarded the leadership position of Executive Chief Medical Resident. Subsequently, she was awarded a Fellowship in Cardiology (the only female in her program) at Mount Sinai Services, City Hospital at Elmhurst.

After one year of teaching, she was awarded a Fellowship in Interventional Cardiology at The University of Wisconsin Medical School. Subsequently, she returned to New York City to teach and serve as Director of The Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory at Elmhurst (the only female director of a Cath lab in NYC at the time) and as Assistant Professor of Medicine and Cardiology at Mount Sinai Medical School, NYC.”

Of particular interest in our part of the 23rd district, the primary candidate advocates a sea wall for Dunkirk Harbor as well as programs to benefit dairy and grape farming.

We endorse Dr. Linda Andrei in the June 26, Democrat Primary election.
